This study evaluated the effects of elevation representativeness of rain gauge networks on areal mean rainfall estimation and inflow simulation in the Namgang Dam basin. A total of 86 ground rain gauges were grouped into institutional networks, and three rainfall events, including one widespread event and two moving-band events, were analyzed using IDW-based basin-average rainfall and K-DRUM. The results showed that differences among networks were limited under widespread rainfall conditions, whereas substantial discrepancies in rainfall and inflow errors occurred during moving rainfall events depending on storm-track location and gauge distribution. Elevation representativeness was identified as an important explanatory factor, but not a sufficient condition by itself. These findings indicate that both topographic representativeness and the spatial structure of rainfall fields should be considered in selecting observation networks for flood forecasting and water resources operation.
